Browns owner Haslam unveils new strategy for rebuilding team
Commentator Terry Pluto says promotion of Sashi Brown to VP of football operations could scare off GM candidates

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is taking an unconventional approach to rebuilding his battered team. After firing coach Mike Pettine and General Manager Ray Farmer Sunday night, Haslam promoted Sashi Brown to head of football operations. Brown is a Harvard-educated lawyer who specializes in the business side of football, like negotiating player contracts. Now, he’s in charge of the 53-man roster, which includes drafting and signing players. WKSU commentator Terry Pluto says it’s an unusual move that could make finding a new general manager difficult.

“I think the strategy is that they have confidence that this Sashi Brown can help them pick the right guys and perhaps he can," Pluto says. "My only concern is that the idea that Brown has a major say over the roster could stop some people from wanting to have the job. Because most general managers want that power. So that could be an impediment.”

Pluto says it could also make it difficult to hire a new head coach. Brown, Haslam and a search committee will hire the head coach first, then the general manager.
