The group, led by Cincinnati firearms instructor Jeffry Smith, has held similar rallies at the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State.
Smith says the purpose is to raise awareness about the state’s open-carry laws. While it is legal to have a firearm in public, Ohio does not permit concealed-carry on college campuses. The Students for Concealed Carry Foundation is currently involved in a case against Ohio State to change that.
The University of Akron walk starts at 1 p.m. at the corner of Hill and South Forge streets. The university issued the following statement:
A group promoting gun rights will conduct an "open carry" walk on UA main campus at 1 p.m. Saturday. The group plans to walk with holstered guns across campus. Similar events have been held on other university campuses in Ohio without incident.
