Perry nuclear plant leak fixed
FirstEnergy says solution is permanent
Story by AKILAH PORTER

FirstEnergy has confirmed the tritium leak at its Perry nuclear power plant has been treated and is no longer a threat.

The radioactive liquid was discovered in a water leak at the plant on Lake Erie on Monday.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Young says the cause is still undetermined, but the leak has been treated with a clamp and sealant, which can act as a permanent solution.

“We have no indications of leak and our sampling has not turned up any additional tritium anywhere,” Young said. “The same sampling that we have done yesterday, we’ve continue to do. We just found that one instance right next to the building, so still nothing has moved off site, no impact to public health and safety, and the leak has been stopped.”

Young said the plant is seeking to replace the unit in 2015 during its annual inspection.
