A temporary stay of execution has been granted to an Ohio inmate who is offering to donate his organs to ailing family members.

Ronald Phillips was scheduled to be executed tomorrow but Gov. John Kasich has issued a last minute reprieve to assess whether the state can facilitate the harvesting of his organs.

State corrections officials on Tuesday denied Phillips organ donation request saying the execution facility is not equipped to handle the procedure.

Kasich’s office now says, if Phillips is found to be a viable kidney donor, the procedure will be performed before he is sent back to death row.

A new execution date of July 2, 2014 has been set.

Phillips was convicted of the 1993 murder of his girlfriend’s three year-old daughter.
