Portage County State Rep. Kathleen Clyde, a Democrat, marked the day by volunteering at a sidewalk registration table on Kent State University’s esplanade. Esplanade on the Kent State University Campus

She also said she is sponsoring new voter sign-up legislation. “H.B. 333 would declare the fourth Tuesday of every September Ohio Voter Registration Day.  To really mark the event in Ohio, and try to be a part of this nationwide effort to educate people about voting and get them participating in their democracy.”

Student action
Clyde joined with Kent State’s student Democrats to register new voters, and 25 signed up in the first half hour.

Sophomore Hana Barkowitz says it was a learning experience for the volunteers.

“People this year are interested in getting involved, because it’s close to an election year. A lot of young students are really interested in trying to help out and support the candidate that they’re passionate for. And it’s really a remarkable feeling to be able to help students express their political self.”
