Six Ohio medical schools are joining a new national network to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Joining Forces Initiative” combines the work of a 130 medical schools and research centers to better understand and treat the conditions. The American Association of Medical Colleges and Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine are coordinating the effort.
The osteopathic association’s president, Stephen Shannon, says more than two-thirds of veterans will receive their medical care outside of the VA, making the initiative timely and necessary. |
“To be sure that our students, our residents and our practicing physicians are aware of the psycho-social conditions and depression that are related to those conditions.”
Many of the schools, including Case Western Reserve University, already have extensive relationships with veterans hospitals. Case medical students have been doing rotations at Cleveland’s VA hospitals for decades.
