Additive Manufacturing, better known as 3-D printing, is one of the fastest growing technology sectors.

It’s a printing process where plastic or metal parts are built-up layer by layer.

In this week’s Exploradio, we look at where the industry is headed and how Northeast Ohio is building itself into the nation’s additive leader.

To break the cycle of lagging behind the rest of the country in economic development, Ohio needs to do more with homegrown innovations. That’s the recommendation a major new study.

The research, funded by the nonprofit Ohio Chamber of Commerce Research Foundation, says the state has as much innovation as other states.  But Foundation board member Elliot Reed said unlike most of them, Ohio hasn’t had a tradition of pushing out knowledge of the breakthroughs to different sectors of business.

A major Israeli business accelerator is now set to work with the Youngstown Business Incubator to bring high-tech start-ups to the Mahoning Valley.

Youngstown incubator CEO Barb Ewing says the agreement with The Junction connects entrepreneurial tech ventures in Israel with markets and operating opportunities in Ohio.

The City of Youngstown could soon add a business incubator on its south side, made up entirely of shipping containers.

The project would convert the containers into small store fronts for entrepreneurs who may not be able to get financing to start a business, or who don’t have enough start-up capital to invest in a traditional building.

The city is studying the cost of the project as well as how to connect the containers to utilities.

Four northeast Ohio economic development groups are working together on an additive manufacturing “map” for the region.

Barb Ewing of the Youngstown Business Incubator sees northeast Ohio as a world leader in Additive manufacturing—utilizing fast-evolving technologies like 3-D printing, adaptive coatings nd super-precision tool making.
