As a potentially deadly heat wave with high humidity sweeps across the eastern United States, some Northeast Ohio cities are taking precautions. 

The following cities are offering cooling centers to their residents, with some even providing transportation:

Akron

Local community centers have extended their hours and will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. through Saturday.

Several tornadoes touched down in highly populated areas of Dayton and other Ohio communities late Monday night, causing catastrophic damage. The storms devastated dozens of buildings and trees. One death has been reported, officials said Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for much of Ohio Tuesday. The warning, which has since expired, meant that conditions were good for wild lands to catch fire and for that fire to spread quickly.

As it turns out, these warnings don’t happen very often, according to Kent State University professor of geography Tom Schmidlin who focuses on climatology.
