The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., based in Akron, was involved in the Apollo 11 mission 50 years ago. The company developed several components, including the flotation device for when the capsule splashed down.

This Sunday Goodyear and NASA team up again to launch an experiment to the International Space Station to see how silica can be reinforced in different environments.

To most of the world, the late Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969, nearly 50 years ago.

A prominent piece of that lunar exploration plan is being built in Cleveland, as WKSU’s Jeff St.Clair reports.

Algae blooms continue to color western Lake Erie a deep green. Now researchers and scientists want to know more about toxins produced by the algae. And they’re getting help from the air.

Some 30,000 feet up in the air, Rafat Ansari flies his small, two-seater plane over Lake Erie. He starts west of Cleveland and flies over the lake's islands to Toledo, and then north into Michigan. The round trip flight is about 260 miles.

Along the way, he snaps photos – about 1,500 of them – with three tiny cameras attached to his plane.

Portman
U.S. SENATE

Sen. Rob Portman says he's making the case in Congress for NASA Glenn Research Center to avoid a 10 percent budget cut.

The Senate's omnibus spending bill would trim $60 million as part of a plan to steer money to a robotic pathfinder program at NASA Goddard in Maryland.

The ranking Democrat on the Senate’s Appropriations Committee is Democrat Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, and Portman says now is not the time for her to take dollars away from NASA Glenn and programs such as its research into jet propulsion.
