Normally this time of year, Progressive Field is filled with cheering Cleveland Indians fans and fireworks. Now because of the pandemic, Major League Baseball players and owners are locked in contentious negotiations to start the season around July 4 without fans. WKSU sports commentator Terry Pluto says the baseball blues are setting in.

Korean baseball is giving American fans something to enjoy while the sports world largely remains sidelined during the pandemic. The Korea Baseball Organization started its season earlier this month in empty stadiums with masks, gloves and no high fives allowed.

WKSU sports commentator Terry Pluto has been watching some of the games that ESPN is airing.

Baseball’s cheating scandal is creating waves in Cleveland. Several Indians players, including pitcher Mike Clevinger, are blasting Major League Baseball for not coming down harder on the Houston Astros. An investigation found that the Astros stole pitching signals to help their batters during their 2017 World Series run. They used a combination of technology and banging a garbage can. WKSU sports commentator Terry Pluto says players have a right to be angry.

Mahoning Valley May Lose Its Minor League Baseball Team

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are one of 42 teams Major League Baseball may cut in a move to upgrade facilities and improve pay for minor leaguers.

The Scrappers are a short-season Class A team affiliated with the Cleveland Indians.

General Manager Jordan Taylor said attendance is strong and cutting any team on the list would devastate local communities.

Pro baseball is a grueling six-month, 162-game season. And the Indians are especially beat up as they head into the home stretch. Yet they’re still in the playoff picture.

Cleveland Preps for MLB All-Star Game

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

It's All-Star Week in Cleveland. The MLB game will be played Tuesday, July 9 at Progressive Field. 

The City of Cleveland is providing detour information to help people avoid congested areas of downtown. According to a press release from the mayor's office both Lakeside Ave. and St. Clair Ave. are closed in preparation for the All-Star Game and will remain closed through July 17th. A full list of road closures during the All-Star Game can be found here.

Northeast Ohio will be the center of the pro sports world over the next several years. This July, Progressive Field hosts the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. In 2021, the city has been awarded as the site of the NFL Draft. In 2022, Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse will host the NBA All-Star Game.
