The word ‘interim’ has been removed from Akron Police Chief Ken Ball’s title. And now that it's official, the new chief is talking about staffing, race relations and other key issues.

The 26-year veteran of law enforcement says the first thing to know about his new job is that there are both long-range and immediate issues in urgent need of attention.

Among immediate priorities is what he says is a critical situation with aging and deteriorating equipment--especially vehicles that must be replaced.

The forced resignation of Akron Police Chief James Nice was fast, unexpected and -- many said -- sad. WKSU’s M.L. Schultze has more on the combination of factors that led to the chief’s departure – and what happens next.

Akron’s  Police Chief James Nice resigned unexpectedly this afternoon at the request of Mayor Dan Horrigan.

The Horrigan administration is offering no comment about the resignation of Nice until a press conference tomorrow afternoon.  Nice, who is an Akron native and former FBI agent,  had been chief since 2011.

Except when he's visiting his wife in a nursing home, 89-year-old James Pint's preferred transportation is a bike. That's what he takes to church, and what he takes to pick up a few items at Marc's. Three or four trips a week, as much as a mile-long ride.

The City of Akron has had a program allowing citizens to ride-along with police for years. Interest was a lot higher over this past weekend, following the killing of five police officers in Dallas and two police-involved shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia rode along with two Akron officers on Saturday night.
