Personal income tax revenue is back up again in the latest round of monthly reports from the state budget office. But as Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports, the overall numbers are right on target. The state’s personal income tax haul for the annual tax return month of April was up nearly 12 percent, and the commercial activity tax that businesses pay was up 35 percent.

At this time last year, state lawmakers were in the midst of creating a two year budget with a deficit that was more than a half a billion dollars. It’s a different situation this year, but for the second month in a row, personal income tax collections came in at a rate lower than expected.

Akron’s city income tax increase has passed by more than a two-to-one margin.

Mayor Dan Horrigan took to the podium to a broad cheer at Jack’s Irish Pub on Tuesday night. The quarter percent income tax increase is expected to generate $16 million for roads, police and fire and EMS.

Asked what they’ll do first, both interim police chief Kenneth Ball and Fire Chief Clarence Tucker talked about safety. Tucker said the new revenue would toward another set of gear for firefighters, to protect against exposure to poisons and carcinogens.
