The immigration raids at a meat supplier in Salem this week have triggered concern among people who work at other plants owned by the same company.

Immigration officials arrested more than 140 people on Tuesday at the Fresh Mark plant in Salem, and also seized documents at Fresh Mark facilities in Canton and Massillon.

For the second time this month, federal agents carried out an immigration raid in northern Ohio. Nearly 150 people were arrested Tuesday in the largest raid in recent history.

A new report highlights how immigrants are spurring economic growth in Ohio, and invigorating communities across the state.

The report, which was produced by the Center for Community Planning and Development at Cleveland State University, notes that immigrants in Ohio are some of the nation’s most educated.

Elaine Woloshyn, the granddaughter of Ukrainian immigrants who headed the agency that brought thousands of immigrants and refugees from around the world to Akron, died on Christmas morning. 

Woloshyn headed the International Institute of Akron for four years, following nearly three decades with other nonprofits and government organizations.

An immigrants’ advocacy group is no longer suing Dover City Schools, or accusing the district of wrong-doing.  And the school system is putting in new procedures aimed at better helping students for whom English is a second language.
