Akron Children’s Hospital is trying to find ways to improve patient health before they need care. The first initiative is a pop up food pantry.

When the hospital surveyed 22,000 kids about barriers to health, 13% said food insecurity was a top concern.

Dr. Steven Spalding, Vice President of Population Health, says that number was overwhelming and they wanted to find a way to address the issue.

The Stark County Hunger Task Force is working to make sure kids who rely on free or reduced-cost lunches during the school year don't fall through the cracks in the summer. The task force is handing out bags each Thursday that include two breakfast and two lunch meals, snacks and drinks.

Assistant Director Stephanie Sweany  says nearly all kids at four Canton elementary schools receive free or reduced lunch.

The Akron-Canton Airport is providing a food pantry to its federal employees who missed their second paycheck Friday because of the partial government shutdown.

The workers can help themselves to the pantry at the MAPS Air Museum in North Canton Friday and Saturday. Federal employees at the airport include TSA agents, air traffic controllers and border customs officers.
