With another government shutdown looming this week, Senate Democrats, including Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, are still hoping to strike a deal on protections for the undocumented immigrants known as "Dreamers." But at a news conference Monday, Brown suggested that failure to reach an agreement on the issue is "unlikely" to result in another shutdown. 


Here are your morning headlines for Friday, Feb. 2:


 The University of Akron’s annual Rethinking Race conference kicks off this Friday. The two-week forum, which includes lectures and discussions, film screenings and plays is now in its eleventh year.

Amy Shriver Dreussi is a professor of social science at the university and one of the organizers of the conference. She says it’s evolved over time in response to current events.

WKSU's special broadcast of NPR's coverage of President Donald Trump's 2018 State of the Union Address on Tuesday, Jan. 30 will include an extended All Things Considered beginning at 8 PM, followed by the live broadcast of President Trump's speech, followed by the Democratic response and commentary. Hosts Mary Louise Kelly and Ari Shapiro will anchor coverage.

Negotiations over the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, enter their sixth round this week. And some Ohio companies are worried the U.S. will follow through on the President's threat to withdraw from the nearly 25-year-old agreement.
