Ohio Department of Health (ODH) officials are now asking doctors and hospitals to report any cases of patients with serious respiratory problems that could be connected to vaping to their local health department.

A new law aims to fight cancer diagnoses among firefighters.

The Firefighter Cancer Registry Act will require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create a voluntary registry to collect data on cancer rates. The results will be made public for researchers.

Democratic U.S Sen. Sherrod Brown, who brought the bill to Congress, said the CDC will develop strategies to use the data to spur research.

The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the findings of their 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey today, measuring the rates of drug use, instances of violence and suicidal thoughts and actions among the nation’s teens.

Fewer teenagers are using drugs and having sex, according to the survey results, but there are still many areas of concern for the public health agency.

Cases of the flu are plaguing Ohioans throughout the state, and hospitalizations are soaring.

The Ohio Department of Health’s Melanie Amato says there’s been a 470 percent increase in hospitalizations related to the flu.

“At this time last year, we had only seen about 369 total hospitalizations.  ... This year, we are at 2,104,” she said.
