Community groups in Akron are working to make sure people participate in next year’s U.S. census so there is an accurate count of the city’s residents.

The incoming CEO of a social service agency focused on the well-being of Asian-Americans and recent immigrants in Northeast Ohio, says she’s looking forward to bringing together some of the agency’s divisions to better serve clients.

Attorney Elaine Tso previously served on the board of Asian Services In Action -- or ASIA, Inc. -- and was interim co-CEO for the past six months. Her first day as CEO is Thursday.

Two non-profits are getting a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to complete Akron’s first shared kitchen and food incubator.

The Well Community Development Corporation and Asian Services in Action (ASIA) received $250,000.

It will provide a full kitchen for local small businesses, food trucks and caterers.

ASIA SERVICES IN ACTION

Asian Services in Action is getting a grant from the McGregor Foundation to provide mental health resources for elderly people in Cuyahoga County.

The group will use the money for its Asian Senior Empowerment Program, which connects low-income Asian Americans with limited English to community and mental health services.
