Road closures begin at 5:30 Friday evening in preparation for the 2019 Akron Marathon. The race begins at 7:30 Saturday morning from a new starting point, Stan Hywet in west Akron. 

In anticipation of the race, S. Main Street, between Exchange and Bowery in downtown Akron will be the first street shut down for the race. E. Buchtel between High and S. Main will close at 7 Friday night.

The second race in the Akron Children's Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series included a record-setting performance. 


The Goodyear Half Marathon and 10K began at the normally closed-to-the-public Goodyear test track Saturday morning. When the course ended at Goodyear's Global Headquarters, 71-year old Jeannie Rice of Mentor unofficiallly broke the world record for her age group with a half-marathon time of 1:37:07. 



Akron Marathon Chooses New Start Location

Runners in the Akron Marathon will start from a different location this fall. Organizers say the move makes the course a better fit with the city’s topography. 

Historic Stan Hywet is the new kickoff location for the race that's been run annually since 2003.

Here are your morning headlines for Friday, September 28:


Thousands are expected in downtown Akron this weekend for the 16th running of the Akron Marathon. Activities kick off Friday evening at 6:30 with the Kids Fun Run at Lock 3. The Marathon begins at 7:00 Saturday morning on High Street near University Avenue.

The 14th Akron Marathon is this weekend. This year’s race features a new way to motivate runners.

Akron Children’s Hospital is sponsoring the race for the first time, and it will bring 13 patients who are struggling with – or have beaten – serious illness. Steven Marks co-founded the marathon and chairs its board of directors.
