Canton’s Aultman Hospital wants to expand a clinic it operates in Massillon to provide core hospital services there.  The city has been without such services for nearly a year.

Massillon, a community of 32,000, has been without a hospital since Affinity Medical Center closed in February. The city bought the complex for a dollar but hasn’t found an operator.

Massillon City Council closed the door Monday on making a deal with the City’s original choice to operate Affinity hospital, but it didn’t lock it.

Two weeks ago Massillon Mayor Kathy Catazarro Perry named Paramount Matrix Healthcare as the city’s choice to run the Affinity facility, which closed in March.

Other bidders upped their offers prompting Council to delayed authorizing legislation to finalize the deal with Paramount in order to get more information.

It will be at least another week before a deal can be reached to get an operator for the former Affinity Medical Center in Massillon.

Massillon City Council met in special session Monday to approve an agreement with Paramount Matrix Healthcare. But it didn’t vote. One of two unsuccessful bidders for the deal to operate the medical center upped its offer. Council wants to consider that before moving forward.

This fall, Massillon’s shuttered Affinity Medical Center could be back in business with a new name and many of its old staff.

Three groups are pitching themselves to Massillon city officials for a chance to take over Affinity Medical Center, which closed earlier this year.

City officials are not saying who the groups are or whether they’re based in Stark County, but each one is proposing a health care-related use for the property.

Massillon could own Affinity Medical Center by the end of the week.

On Monday, City Council approved a takeover deal for the property and assets of the now-closed hospital from its current owner Quorum Health. Mayor Kathy Catazaro-Perry says only the final paperwork remains to be signed to set the ownership change in motion.

An effort by doctors to buy Affinity Medical Center in Massillon seems to be coming up short.

Dr. Nash Gabrail has been spearheading an effort to try to save the hospital. Its private, for-profit owner announced three weeks ago it was shutting it down.

Here are your morning headlines for Wednesday, Jan. 24:

A judge's decison has put, at least for now, a hold on plans to wind down operations at Massillon’s Affinity Medical Center. However, if western Stark County’s only hospital does shut down, EMS services for the area are expected to be impacted.

Time is the issue, says Massillon Fire Chief Tom Burgasser. Taking critical patients to the ‘next nearest’ emergency rooms -- in Canton can add 10 to 20 minutes to getting them to needed help.  And, he says, that’s especially a problem for cardiac cases.

Massillon asked a Stark County judge today to delay the closing of Affinity Medical Center for four months.

Ideas for legal options to keep Affinity open have been circulating since the hospital’s owner, Quorum Health, announced plans Jan. 5th to close it.

It plans to cease clinical operations Feb. 4 and close Affinity entirely a month later.

Two northeast Ohio representatives who introduced a bill to slow the  closing of Massillon's only hospital are pushing for action on the  measure this week.

Affinity Medical Center owner  Quorum Health Corporation said on Jan. 5th it will close the hospital March 6th.  All clinical operations are to end a month sooner, on Feb. 4.

A week after owners of the only hospital in Massillon said they’re shutting it down at the end of next month, a pair of Stark County legislators are introducing a bill to slow down the shut down.

Republican Rep. Kirk Schuring and Democratic Rep. Thomas West are co-sponsoring H.B. 462. It says Affinity Medical Center can’t shut its doors for nine more months.

Schuring says abruptly leaving 30,000 people without hospital services is unacceptable.
