  • Akron making plans to dredge Lake Rockwell to improve drinking water
Plans are in the works to dredge the reservoir that supplies drinking water for the city of Akron. The Beacon Journal reports dredging sediments from the bottom of Lake Rockwell near Kent would reduce algae that triggers poor taste and odors. It would also increase water storage capacity. The city has hired consultants to begin preliminary planning and hope to have dredging done in the next five years. They say the biggest concern is how stirring the sediments would hurt water quality during the process.

Shots fired at Cleveland police in foot pursuit

Cleveland police say shots were fired at officers in a foot chase of a suspect near the site of a boy's fatal encounter with police last year. Police Chief Calvin Williams says police responded Sunday to a report of six men waving guns on West 83rd Street and Detroit Avenue when one them fled. The chief says the man pointed a gun at officers and an officer fired four shots but did not hit him. Williams says unidentified people began firing at officers. The man who fled was injured as he jumped a fence before he was arrested. The chase occurred not far from where Tamir Rice was fatally shot in November. Dozens of people gathered nearby Sunday and yelled at officers.

New training simulation lab for VA workers
A new $3.3 million simulation laboratory will train thousands of VA health workers and others in the state at a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center in southwest Ohio. The Dayton VA Medical Center also has rolled out a $1 million mobile training laboratory that VA officials say is a one-of-a-kind facility within the VA's nationwide hospital and clinic network. The mobile lab that will travel to VA hospitals in Ohio and parts of Indiana and Kentucky offers two simulation stations outfitted with human-like mannequins.

Lower water levels at Buckeye Lake could help troubled bog
The lowering of central Ohio's Buckeye Lake while the state makes plans to replace the deteriorated dam might benefit an unusual nature preserve in the water. Amid concerns about potential economic and environmental effects, there's hope that Cranberry Bog could be a patch of positivity. The fragile, 10-acre bog has been shrinking for decades as surrounding water and waves encourage natural decomposition of the island environment, which is based on moss that makes the area very acidic. The coordinator of Ohio's preserves says the lower water level and less lake activity could lessen such deterioration and enable acidity that helps the bog thrive.

Teen charged in murders of four people in central Ohio
Police investigating the fatal shootings of four people at a central Ohio home say they have arrested a teenager on murder and kidnapping charges. Jordyn Wade, 16, of South Linden was arrested on Sunday and charged with four delinquency counts of murder and five counts of kidnapping. Police were called to the home Saturday morning, where there was a bleeding woman on the sidewalk. She told police there were four bodies in the house. Police have not provided a motive for the slayings.

Man believed to have accidentally drowned at Aurora lake
Authorities say the body of a 55-year-old man who apparently drowned accidentally has been pulled from Sunny Lake in Aurora the day after he was reported missing in the lake. Authorities began searching for the man about 9:45 p.m. Saturday and his body was discovered Sunday afternoon. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Gas averaging $2.83, up 13 cents from last week
Ohio gas prices are up to start the work week. A gallon of regular gas in Ohio is averaging $2.83 in today's survey from auto club AAA and its partners. That's up 13 cents from a week ago. Average prices in Ohio were above the nation's $2.80 average. But Ohio gas prices remain significantly cheaper than last year at this time, when prices were averaging $3.87 per gallon. Analysts say a good gas supply and stable crude oil prices mean gas prices could stop rising and may drop in the next two weeks.
