Southwest, AirTran merger may mean changes for Northeast Ohio airports
An air travel analyst says Southwest flights are expected to continue out of Akron and Cleveland
Story by PHIL TORRES

Akron Canton airport, who's primary carrier is AirTran

Now that Southwest Airlines owns AirTran Airways, analysts and passengers are trying to figure out the impact on two of Northeast Ohio’s biggest airports.  AirTran is the biggest carrier at Akron Canton airport, and is responsible for much of the airport’s rapid growth. Southwest is the second largest carrier at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Brett Snyder is an analyst with Cranky Concierge Air Travel Assistance, which helps airline passengers find and monitor flights. He expects Southwest will continue flights out of both Akron and Cleveland.

Snyder notes that Southwest did that in New England, where Manchester served flights to the north, and Providence to the south.

He does expect that airfares at Akron-Canton will be going up because it is a more expensive airline to operate than AirTran.
