Exploradio: Environmental Stories - Ohio SPJ Awards Best Environmental Reporting

Exploradio host Jeff St. Clair has a long history of using his scientific background to connect with environmental issues. The one-time chemist finds many ways to feature natural research in his twice monthly series on innovative activities in Northeast Ohio. With a true interest in the natural world, which shines through in his reporting, St. Clair is able to engage listens with topics that could seem mundane or too academic. St. Clair’s extensive knowledge and connection with his interview subjects also creates personal moments that draw listeners into stories on a deeper level.

The featured segments include a project building nesting houses for kestrels, small falcons, at Hiram College; a look at how following the path of cicadas has changed with the explosion of “citizen scientists” and cell phones; and a researcher who is hoping to stop the spread of the zika virus by studying the mating habits of mosquitos.
