It was on this date in 1683 that the Dutch scientist, Antonie Philips van Leeuwenhoek became the first to report the existence of bacteria. He is known currently as the father of biology. And it was on this date in 1862 that the Battle of Antietam occurred. It was the bloodiest day of the American Civil War and resulted in a Union victory.
