Aretha Franklin wipes a tear after being given the Presidential Medal of Freedom on November 9, 2005, at the White House. She is seated between fellow recipients Robert Conquest (left) and Alan Greenspan (right).

It was on this date in 1967 that Aretha Franklin released her most famous song, Respect. On June 3rd, it reached the top spot on the Billboard Top 100. And it was on this date in 1992 that arsons and riots began in Los Angeles. They were in response to the acquittal of police officers in relation to the Rodney King beatings.
