It was on this date in 1863 that the Richmond Bread Riots began. The Richmond Bread Riots were the largest civil disturbance in the Confederacy during the war. And it was on this date in 1865 that starving Richmond residents fleeing ahead of Union forces discovered a huge cache of food. Someone had been holding onto the goods to profit from the war, causing another riot to erupt.
