A painting of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson
Left is the official presidential portrait of John Adams as painted by John Trumbull. On right is a painting of Thomas Jefferson by Charles Wilson Peale. The two were opponents in the U.S. election of 1796.

Today's almanac is all about U.S. elections. It was on this date in 1796 that the first contested presidential election took place. It was the first election to include political parties. And it was on this date in 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt won a second term in office.
