Last year, as we quickly assembled and produced the first Ornaments special, we tried mightily to use as few released recordings as possible. We did pretty well, too, only using four (not counting the one classic each hour). Tom's half original version of Jingle Bells from an album he'd recorded a few years back was one of the four, and he did a wonderful introduction to it, personalizing it for us.
So this year, when the show had enough lead time to be entirely new, did he have anything he wanted to contribute as a brand new ornament?
"Sure. I have an old song, never recorded, that would be good for the show. It's called 'It Was A Night Like This' and I'd love to work with Robin (Bullock), Al & Amy on it, or maybe Pete & Maura Kennedy...We can do this, though."
As we mentioned in Robin Bullock's song info, we weren't sure how many songs we'd get from that whole crowd of musicians, or who would be on what, but it sure worked out well, as we got three! As well as recording their own, Al and Amy added wonderfully to this gentle and meaningful song. We're happy to have been the catalyst for getting it recorded. |
