Tony Trischka - Christmas Night WKSU Home
Tony finished writing this song after playing the Kent State Folk Festival on September 24th, 1999. He and Paul Kovac huddled back at the hotel and finished it, and then met Joe Gunderman at the station where, from 1 til 3 in the morning, September 25, 1999, at WKSU, most of it was recorded. Tony plays two banjo parts, and Paul is on mandolin, guitar and vocal. A few weeks later, Grace Griffith and Joe added backing vocals.

"It was like the banjo chose me. I didn't have a say in the matter." That's the way Tony describes his relationship to the instrument he has brought such a long way. He is one of the most innovative banjo players in the world, and is credited by many as the founder of avant garde banjo. He was the first to use banjos, fiddles and mandolins with electric guitars and synthesizers. He has collaborated with his former student Bela Fleck, David Grisman, The Violent Femmes, members of R.E.M., William S. Burroughs and Leftover Salmon. These days he plays shows both as a solo artist and with the Tony Trischka Band.
