Bela Fleck - God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen WKSU Home
"Hi, I'm Bela" he said when he walked in with his white banjo case. No big deal. It was a Sunday afternoon and the Flecktones were playing Kent State that night. In Studio C, with two 4033's aimed at this banjo, he warmed up and laid down this. It is unedited.

His early influences were Tony Trischka, Mark Horowitz, Erik Darling, Earl Scruggs, Chick Corea, Charlie Parker, Joni Mitchell and The Beatles. Does that explain it? He started on the 5 string banjo at age 15 in New York City, and by age 26, Frets Magazine retired him to their "Gallery of Greats" because he'd won Best Banjoist five times! Before his "retirement" (only by the magazine, folks) he had studied jazz in Boston, played on street corners, and moved on through Kentucky to Nashville. There, he simply played with everybody. In the late '80s came Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, which lead to a 1991 #1 album and a 1996 Grammy.
