A few years ago the state decided it was time to swap out a statue of Ohio’s pro-slavery Gov. William Allen that was sitting in the U.S. Capitol Building.

The public voted Thomas Edison as the replacement.

Republican Representative Ron Amstutz of Wooster says Edison is an appropriate symbol of Ohio—a state which he says is the home of a thriving creative spirit.

Amstutz: “Thomas Edison is a good representative of that creativity, of Ohio’s creative spirit in action. Edison was an amazing figure.”

The statue will remain in the Statehouse until October and then permanently move to the Capitol.
