Republican Gov. John Kasich, who’s long been rumored to be considering a run for president in 2016, was at a campaign event in Cincinnati when he got the news. Kasich says choosing Ohio shows the GOP is stepping out of its comfort zone.

“To be able to present a Republican Party that’s strong economically but cares about people who live in the shadows – it’s such a message that the Republicans have not had. And we’re doing it.”

But Kasich’s Democratic opponent this fall, Cuyahoga County executive Ed FitzGerald, said in a statement that the choice is a tribute to the hard work he and other Democrats have done in turning the area around.
