In The Region:

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District has issued swimming advisories at three beaches because of high bacterial levels. The levels were caused by the overflow of raw sewage into Lake Erie during Tuesday night’s rain storm.

Jeannie Chapman of the sewer district, says the overflows have been going on for years, but they don’t happen as often as they used to.

“At Edgewater, we have one outfall that sits on the beach. Back in the 1970’s, that outfall use to discharge about 40 to 50 times a year. Because of some significant sewer infrastructure improvements, that outfall may discharge once every two or three years.”

Despite the reduction, Chapman says there is still a lot of work to do.

The district has started a 20-year, three billion dollar program to meet Clean Water Act standards.
