In The Region:

Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel told an audience of about 300 people Thursday why he should be the next president of the University of Akron.

Tressel has been a vice president at the university for two years, and is one of three candidates to replace retiring President Luis Proenza.

Tressel talked about making the university more efficient, putting more effort into retaining students, and creating a “oneness” among everyone on campus.

Some people are concerned that Tressel does not have a doctoral degree. He addressed that question when asked what qualities he would want in a provost.

“The provost in my mind may be one of the most important decisions a president who doesn’t have as much academic experience would need to make. I don’t pretend to have sat in a a multitude of faculty senate meetings, department chair meetings, curriculum meetings.”

Tressel is also vying for the Youngstown State University president’s position.
