Ohio introduces its new Medicaid application system
Ohioans can now sign up for Medicaid benefits online
by WKSU's ANDY CHOW

In The Region:

The state says it’s created a new system to connect Ohioans to Medicaid benefits faster. As Statehouse correspondent Andy Chow reports, this is just another step in the state’s attempt to better coordinate public assistance programs.

The state’s new online system to connect Medicaid benefits to eligible Ohioans received more than 1,100 applications in its first day of operation. This was also the first time people under the expanded Medicaid program could sign-up online.

The digital application service replaces the old system, which had been in place for 32 years.

Sam Rossi with the Ohio Department of Medicaid says by 2015, the site will become a one-stop shop for Ohioans to find out if they’re eligible for Medicaid, food stamps and welfare.

“This is a central location for instantaneous eligibility determination. That’s something Ohio has never had.”

Those who apply might find out they aren’t eligible for Medicaid, in which case the office will refer them to possible benefits through the federal exchange.
