Akron has joined Canton, Cleveland and a growing number of cities nationwide that will now allow people with certain felony records to apply for city jobs. WKSU’s M.L. Schultze has more on the latest step in the “ban the box” movement.

The city had forbidden anyone with a felony record from getting a city job for at least five years after they finished any part of their sentence – including probation.

The city’s Civil Service Commission changed that this week. And Akron is now following new Equal Employment Opportunity Commission guidelines by removing a box that declares you are a convicted felon from its initial job applications.

Interim Personnel Director Patricia Ambrose-Rubright says a blanket policy gained the city very little.

“Although they are felonies and I don’t want to come off that I don’t think felonies are serious offenses, but rather there are different degrees of felonies and there are different factual circumstances.”

Still under the five-year ban are people with sex, drug or violent offenses.  But the others face three years, and the city can take into account nearly a dozen factors.

Ambrose-Rubright says people will still have to disclose felony records before their applications are sent from her department to the ones doing the hiring.
