Airport expansion leaves travelers short on parking
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport opens employee lot to customers during construction period
by WKSU's AMY COOKNICK

Reporter

Cleveland Hopkins:

Passengers at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport are feeling the squeeze as parking availability decreases during expansions.

The airport opened 400 spaces of the Old Grayton Road employee lot to the public last week to reduce traffic while the airport undergoes a $24 million dollar parking expansion. The expansion began with the demolition of the 40-year-old long-term parking garage in July that housed more than 2,500 spaces.

Airport spokeswoman Jackie Mayo says the expansion includes a 230-space lot close to the terminal, a thousand-space covered surface lot, and another smaller overflow lot.  Mayo says there’s no need to worry about future parking headaches.

“We’re not landlocked. We could expand," Mayo says. "We just have to look at where we would be placing it, how close it would be and the future of the various different parking areas.”

Mayo says the airport also recently opened a “smart garage” that uses floor sensors to alert people to empty spaces before they enter a jam-packed garage.

She adds airport expansion should be complete by the holidays.
