In The Region:

A growing number of teachers are returning to Ohio’s public schools this week and next under shorter-term labor contracts.

Andy Jewell is a researcher for the Ohio Education Association, the state’s largest teacher-union umbrella group. He says uncertainty about everything from the state budget to new academic standards make it hard to commit to long-term deals.

“When the economy started to sour you know when budgets got tighter it became more common to for folks to bargain more shorter term collective agreements. In a period of uncertainty—the greatest certainty is in the shortest period of time.”

Both the OEA and the Ohio School Boards Association say that salary scales and teacher evaluations seem to be the main sticking points in contract negotiations happening around the state.

But they also say the unions and schools boards are usually willing to cooperate and extend old contracts if they can’t reach an agreement on a new one.
