Ohio's beaches are ranked the worst by environmental group
Bacteria and toxins in Lake Erie lead to poor report ranking
Story by GRACE MURRAY

In The Region:

Ohio is home to the nation’s worst beaches, according to a new beachwater quality report.

The National Resources Defense Council released its findings Wednesday that included data from more than 3,000 beaches in the country’s coastal states.

The council’s Rob Moore says 20 percent of Ohio’s waters have unsafe bacteria levels caused by runoff of raw sewage, which have shut down local beaches.

“Your sanitary sewer and your storm water system are going through the same pipe, so during a heavy storm system all of that water is directed to your sanitary sewage treatment plant, which is not designed to be able to take that much water at one time," Moore says. "So it just has to open up the valves and let the sewage and the storm water go out into the lake sometimes.”

Moore says Ohio could improve its beaches with monitoring systems or green energy alternatives.

Of the 30 states the resources defense council studied, those that border the Great Lakes performed the worst.

Listener Comments:

Just about everyone in NE Ohio are paying significantly higher sewer rates to fund projects to mitigate and reduce the storm runoff overflow / sanitary sewage problem. Those projects take time, and cannot be completed overnight.
