Tuesday, March 19, 2013 Kent State expands insurance degree program Insurance industry expects wave of hiring over next three years as Baby Boomer agents retire by WKSU's GRANT ENGLE | Reporter Grant Engle | | |
In The Region: Baby boomers working in the insurance field are nearing retirement age, and that’s why experts in the industry say Ohio may need 17,000 new insurance professionals by 2016 to make up for retiring agents.
Kent State University announced today that it is offering students a chance to fill the gap by becoming the first public university in more than 20 years to offer a degree in insurance.
Carol Blaine developed the program and will teach the insurance classes. She says the last hiring boom was in the 1970s and 1980s, and many companies haven’t needed to hire new agents in decades. |
“Those of us that came in were well-trained, well-schooled through different corporate programs and we were able to fulfill most of the need for workers until recently.”
Blaine says Ohio is the seventh-largest employer of insurance agents with more than 100,000 people working in the industry. |
