Politics Friday, March 15, 2013 Congressman Tim Ryan bows out of the race for governor Ryan says that he doesn't think he'll be able to do as much for the state as governor by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER |

In The Region: Democrats in Ohio appear to be closer to having a single candidate going into next year’s race for governor. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports. |
Youngstown-area Congressman Tim Ryan, who’s long been considering a run for governor next year, now says he won’t. "It has become increasingly clear to me that I will be able to do more for the region, state, and country by continuing to serve in the House of Representatives rather than running for governor," he said in a statement.
His announcement comes the same week that Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald did what he’d been talking about for months:
“Today I’m announcing the formation of an exploratory committee to run for governor.”
A recent Quinnipiac poll showed Ryan would do better than FitzGerald against incumbent Republican John Kasich. But Kasich still beats them both; he leads Ryan by 8 points and FitzGerald by 10. Democrats gathered Friday night for their annual legacy dinner in Columbus, and both FitzGerald and Ryan spoke. |
