Economy and Business Thursday, February 28, 2013 Ohio Bar Association opposes Kasich's sales tax plan Lawyers say proposed tax could make legal costs unreasonable by WKSU's GRANT ENGLE | Reporter Grant Engle | | |
In The Region: Legal fees are just one of about 80 services that will be hit with a 5 percent Ohio sales tax if Gov. John Kasich gets his way.
He’s pushing a broadening of the sales tax base to raise money for a major cut in the state income tax. But Ohio lawyers are protesting. The state bar association has just come out against the sales tax hike.
Incoming Ohio State Bar Association President Jonathan Hollingsworth worries that a new tax would inflate legal expenses for families and for businesses, and he tells statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen that could even cause constitutional problems because criminal defendants have a right to legal advice. |
The bar association is one of the most politically powerful groups to come out against Gov. Kasich’s proposal to spread a 5 percent state sales tax to several dozen services.
Also on the list are funerals, cable TV, haircuts, accounting, pet grooming, movie tickets and bowling. |
