Government Monday, February 4, 2013 Cleveland City Council considering fixes for RTA decorum Stiffer penalties and surveillance cameras are part of the proposal by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA |
 Reporter Kabir Bhatia | | |
In The Region: A Cleveland City Councilman plans to introduce a measure tonight to end what he calls a “party atmosphere” on the city’s public transportation.
It’s in response to a viral video of an RTA driver punching a woman last fall. Councilman Kevin Conwell is pushing for stiffer penalties for anyone acting up, fighting or damaging property on RTA buses and trains, with fines up to one-thousand dollars. |
“We will evaluate this within 6 months to see where we're at. And if I need to bump fines up or whatever the case may be we would do that. The main thing in any civilization is you must protect transportation.”
Conwell’s bill does not ask for the installation of surveillance equipment. That’s because RTA plans to introduce a $2 million plan for cameras at its board of trustees meeting tomorrow night. Both measures have the support of the transit workers’ union, which says RTA drivers have been getting attacked for years. |
