Economy and Business Thursday, January 24, 2013 Swidarski is out as Diebold's CEO amid warnings of poor performance Green-based maker of voting machines and ATMs has a new chief operating officer by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA |
 Reporter Kabir Bhatia | | |
In The Region: Green-based Diebold has a new chief operating officer, George Mayes Jr. He will handle day-to-day operations now that CEO Thomas Swidarski has stepped down after seven years. Diebold cited the company’s ongoing under-performance as the reason for the change. Spokesman Mike Jacobsen says Mayes’ international expertise is a better match for the firm going forward. He says ongoing delays in Brazilian operations are one example of the company’s challenges. |
“ATMs [and] financial industries are very big for us there. There’s a lot of government contracts there. Sometimes it’s hard to get very clear visibility as to what we’re going to do in Brazil from an orders standpoint.” Diebold also sells voting machines in Brazil, but Jacobsen says that business is more cyclical. The change in management comes just as the company has indicated its 2012 earnings will be below expectations. |
