Economy and Business Monday, January 14, 2013 Ohio government approves grants for state colleges State gives final OK for money toward thousands of paid internships for college students by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT BILL COHEN |
 Reporter Bill Cohen | | |
In The Region: Nearly 35-hundred Ohio college students may soon get paid internships or co-op jobs, thanks to a new infusion of government money.
The State Controlling Board has given final approval to 11 million dollars in grants to 23 community colleges and universities.
Jeff Robinson with the Ohio Board of Regents says the money will be matched by funds from prospective employers to pay the students’ salaries. He also says the focus is on very specific fields of work.

Advance manufacturing, aerospace aviation, automotive, energy, bio-health, financial services, food processing, information technology, polymers and business functions that include logistics and research and development.
The government share of this internship money originates from licensing fees, paid by Ohio’s four new gambling casinos.
The licensing fee money was channeled into workforce development programs when voters okay-ed the casino ballot issue in 2009. |
