| A top aide to former Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo has been sentenced to nearly 4 years in prison on racketeering charges. WKSU’s Amanda Rabinowitz reports. |
Samir Mohammad faced as many as 6 1/2 years in prison before reaching a deal with prosecutors last October. Mohammad pleaded guilty to charges that he bribed Russo, former county Commissioner Jimmy Dimora and other public officials in exchange for jobs and personnel decisions that helped them out. Mohammad also admitted to passing along $20,000 to Dimora that was spent on a gambling trip to Windsor, Ontario.
Federal Judge Sara Lioi in Akron ordered Mohammad to forfeit $50,000 to the county that he received as a kickback from a county contractor and pay a 10-thousand dollar fine. At the sentencing, Mohammad told the judge, "I regret everything.”
Mohammad’s business partner Sam Qasem also was sentenced to four months in prison for bribery. The two co-own gas stations in Cuyahoga and Summit Counties, along with other real estate in Cleveland. |
