Government Wednesday, December 12, 2012 Ohioans say they want to continue to elect justices to Ohio Supreme Court A new poll shows that people prefer the current method of electing justices instead of legislative appointment by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT JO INGLES |
 Reporter Jo Ingles | | |
| It seems like every time there’s a race for Ohio Supreme Court, there’s an ad or two that raises eyebrows because it is distasteful. And after every election, it seems there are questions by some about whether the state should change the way it chooses justices for the high court. But as Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles reports, it doesn’t appear Ohioans are ready for a change to that system. |
Most Ohioans say they want to continue to elect Supreme Court justices….even if there are problems with that system. In a new Quinnipiac University poll, 81 percent of those surveyed say they prefer the current method of electing judges over legislative and gubernatorial appointment. Only 15 percent say they’d like the Governor and lawmakers to choose justices to the state’s highest court. Several different methods of appointment and retention have been discussed by judicial and legislative leaders at the Statehouse in the past but none have gained the traction they needed to be embraced by the public. |
