Tuesday, December 11, 2012 Ohio Senate leave House gambling bill without a vote Internet cafes will continue to be unregulated by WKSU's M.L. SCHULTZE |
 Web Editor M.L. Schultze | | |
In The Region: The Ohio Senate announced via Twitter this afternoon it will not vote on a House-passed bill that would virtually eliminate internet cafes in the state.
Proponents of the House bill say the 800-plus cafes are essentially unregulated gambling halls. And Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine warned that they may be prime for money laundering and organized crime.
But after the House passed the bill, the Senate was flooded by complaints from internet café operators, workers and customers, who said the clamp-down would eliminate jobs.
DeWine said he’s disappointed in the Senate, but thinks the debate was healthy and will be picked up again next year. |
