Wednesday, November 7, 2012 Democrats lose one Ohio Supreme Justice, gain another Ohio Democratic party wants to add party affiliation on ballot for Supreme Court candidates by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER This story is part of a special series.

| Democrats lost one justice on the Ohio Supreme Court but gained another, as incumbent Yvette McGee Brown fell to Republican Sharon Kennedy. And Democrat Bill O’Neill beat sitting Republican justice Robert Cupp. Ohio Democratic Party chair Chris Redfern says the one thing in common in both those races is that both winners had what political observers consider “good ballot names.” Redfern says he’ll work to change that when he takes his seat as a newly elected state representative in January. |
“I’ll be introducing legislation in January that will require the party affiliation to appear on the ballot next to the candidate running,” Redfern says. “That will go a long way in allowing voters to have a more informed opportunity when making decisions about the Ohio Supreme Court.
Democrats have wanted party labels on the ballot in judicial races for a while, saying they’re appropriate since judges are nominated in partisan primaries. But Redfern will be in the minority. A few races are still being reviewed, but Republicans are likely to out-number Democrats by at least 17 house members. |
