In The Region: Ohio voter watchdogs will be out in full force on Election Day, hearing complaints of fraud and abuses. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia reports. |
The U.S. attorney’s office in Cleveland has assigned one of its top prosecutors to be on call on Election Day to field complaints of voter intimidation and fraud in Ohio. Ann Rowland will be part of a national network of Justice Department attorneys and FBI field offices.
Candice Hoke is an election law expert at Cleveland State’s Marshall College of Law, and says the groups will be looking for any sort of harassment.
“Any kind of effort to intimidate voters, misdirect voters, give out dis-information...In 2004, for instance, we saw that there were suited men who would walk up to minority voters and question them as to whether they had proper IDs and why they were standing in line. Basically, intimidation tactics.”
Hoke also expects to hear complaints of polling places that are not fully accessible to disabled voters.
Ann Rowland, U.S. Attorney's Office (Cleveland): (216) 622-3847 Civil Rights Division (Washington, D.C.): (800) 253-3931 / (202) 307-2767 FBI field office (Cleveland): (216) 522-1400 Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights: (866) OUR-VOTE |
