Thursday, October 25, 2012 Controversial ad attacks Supreme Court candidate The ad claims that Bob O'Neil shows sympathy for racists by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT JO INGLES This story is part of a special series.

| An ad for an Ohio Supreme Court candidate is causing controversy. Even the candidate himself says he doesn’t like it. Ohio Public Radio' Jo Ingles reports. |
The fifteen second ad for Republican Supreme Court Justice Bob Cupp doesn’t say much about his opponent but what it says is powerful.
“When crime occurs, victims deserve justice but as a judge, Bill O’Neill expresses sympathy for racists.”
“There’s a reason Bob Cupp and the Republicans have sank to a new low in this race. Their polling shows the same thing as ours. This race is a toss up so they are polling out every last dirty trick they know of to try to shame Bill O’Neill and his record. It’s shameful and Ohioans deserve better.”
That’s Chris Redfern of the Ohio Democratic Party. He says Cupp should demand the ad be removed from the airwaves immediately and apologize. Justice Cupp, in a written statement, says his campaign found out about the state party ad shortly after the news media did. He says he is not aware that such an ad has actually been broadcast. Cupp adds he does not believe the purported ad is an appropriate approach to judicial campaigning and has not and would not approve a commercial like this. The Ohio Republican Party is the organization responsible for the ad. There’s no word from the party yet on whether it will remove the ad. |
